29 cfr 1910 27 d 5 states that ladder safety devices i e. Rope grabs horizontal lifelines may be used on ladders greater than 20 feet in length in lieu of a cage in certain circumstances. Extension posts mount permanently to the top two rungs of any alaco 560 series fixed ladder and 775 series ships ladder providing a positive hand hold that enables users to enter or exit openings in an upright and balanced position. The exterior ladder system can be seamlessly connected to the non penetrating roofbarrier system providing the highest level of rooftop access safety.

If the parapet is continuous the access level is the top of the parapet. To protect the worker exiting a ladder osha requires a 42 inch high grab bar extension above the access level or landing platform at the top of the ladder. Cages and walk thru handrails extend 42 above landing surface. All roof access ladder systems can be equipped with a removable ladder door to protect against unauthorized use providing additional public safety.

Note that the regulation specifically points out tower water tank and chimney ladders as the excepted circumstances. Side rails of through or side step fixed ladders must extend 42 inches 1 1 m above the top level or landing platform served by the ladder. Cages have flared bottom opening for easy entry. Cage begins 7 from bottom of ladder. When a ladder safety system is provided the maximum clearance between side rails of the extension must not exceed 36 inches 91 cm.
