If you can run an ethernet cable from the router up to an attic for example then you can attach a second router or a wireless access point.
As for the routers they do tend to run warm but not crazily so so i can see your point about not bothering with any special cooling solution.
An access point lets you keep the router in a back room and still get great internet where.

Attics can get warm in summer but unless you re living on the equator or something i can t see that it would be a big problem.
I put it in the attic because i needed a wifi signal on my back patio and placing the router at a particular place in the attic is what gave me the strongest signal on the patio.

While netgear s 160 router offers plenty of extra features and great coverage you can likely get by with tp link s 60 router if your home isn t large.
